Discussion > Contest

Thanks to Sandy for undertaking our first NAR contest in my memory. I was consistent DQing both times I tried. I enjoyed the activity and thought it was a great addition to our launch! I look forward to more.

I'll third that Thanks!! I had a great time and learned some building skills. Clearly a lot of thought and effort went in to the preperations. Just another of the perks of belonging to a club. Looking forward to the next one. Steve.

No doubt about it, Sandy did an excellent job. I spent some time yesterday looking into contest designs for the future events. It was also the first time I've seen a launch tower used which was very interesting.

Thanks for the comments guys. Lets put together some ideas for what events we'd like to run next time and give everyone a chance to build something if they'd like to. I think we can consider the provisional events as well.

From Paul and Wayne comes this idea:

Half-A-Day... pun intended.

1/2A Parchute Duration (7)
1/2A SuperROC (13)
1/2A Streamer Duration (8)

This comes to 28 weighting points out of a max of 40. Since each section can only fly 5 contests of the "local/section" type typically a club tries to maximize the number of weighting points since a participant is assigned one contest factor and can only accumlate total of 12 contest factors in a year other than the national contest launch which does not count against this total.

With this distribution we could add multiround to both Parachute and Streamer durations which would give us another 8 weighting points bringing the total to 36. Alternately some other events need to be selected.

Events that can be restricted to 1/2A:

Event 1/2A

Altitude 9
Boost Glider Duration 17
Cluster Altitude 14
Flex-Wing Glider Duration 17
Helicopter Duration 19
Parachute Duration 7
Rocket Glider Duration 19
Scale Altitude 27
Streamer Duration 8
Super-Roc Altitude 14
Super-Roc Duration 13

NOTE: Add 4 to Duration
Weighting Factors for
Multi-Round events. +4

Max 40

Personally I think the Half-A-Day contest sounds fun but I'm not hot on the multiround add-ons. Without them it's hard to get from 28 to 40 using true 1/2A contests. However we could toss in some contests that are not motor size defined like Predicted Duration (8) and Drag Race (2). The cost of motors for someone going multiple rounds on Drag Race is going to push people towards smaller motors already and most of us would stick to the 1/2A motors just to stay with the theme I think...

With those plus the others listed earlier we would have 38 points. You could switch Drag Race for Spot Landing but we just did it so I'm not sure if that's of interest to folks or not. Maybe people want to try it a bit to hone their skills? Alternately Sandy could choose to knock off one of the duration events (parachute or streamer) and add Boost or Rocket Gliders to the mix but that tends to be a bit hard to get people to take on.

I like the 1/2 A idea. It would also mean that we could have a summer alternative with low power rockets where field size is not as great a concern.

May 7, 2012 | Registered CommenterMalcolm Smith

As contest director, I'm fine with the theme for 1/2A's. As a flier, I wasn't that interested until Malcolm pointed out the field possabilities. Lets PLEASE pursue this idea somehow. I'm sure we're losing the field to crops at some point in the near future, so lets figure out where we could successfully hold a 1/2A contest and pursue that!

Great idea!!!

Sandy.

So based on Sandy's comments we need a summer field. I think I'll start another thread for that specifically. If you guys have thoughts on it join in that thread please.
