Launch Report for Saturday July 21 2007

Welcome to all you Rocket Scientists, young and old, male and female, nerd and geek.
Saturdays launch on the 21st of July was PACKED. We had 22 Scouts (that indicated as Scout on the sign-in sheet) from Pack 214 in Matthews come out. Plus all family members and friends. Thanks to Mr. Brad McLelland and Mr. David Hutchinson with Cub Scout Pack 214 of Matthews for the kind Thank-You letters.
Like Ralph, our club Prez said, we really enjoyed having you come out, consider yourself welcome any time. We found 4 rockets we think are Scouts by end of Sunday. So you got to come back.
So, with our regular members also on site, we had 56 actual flyers, with a whooping 153 documented flights for the day, which ended at 8pm dusk dark with Mark Ferrells high powered Skid-more launch, which was beautifully spectacular in the near dark.
SO that is why Im putting out Saturdays report separately first. It is going to be a big listing of fliers and flights all by it self. Also, many of you with business and school e-address have blockers or maximum limits on your e-mail reception.
We want to thank Brent Johnson of HobbyTown USA for coming out Saturday to meet the needs of the low and mid power fliers, his Sunday was committed to a 200+ rocket launch in Mooresville on a Build it and Blast it type activity with another group.
Also, Ken Allen with Performance Hobbies was on site Sat and Sun to meet the needs of the high power fliers. And we even had a few camp-out over for the night.
Im starting off with the scouts who signed in. If your name comes up later, its because I did not know you were a scout because you didnt put Scout next to your name. Sorry.
FYI= LP= Low Power engine, MP= Mid Power engine, HP= High Power engine.
BTW, James Mclelland had the most flights of the scouts with 9 total. The average flight per scout was 3.5 ea. All the Scouts flew LP, Low Power engines.
Justin Pitman flew the Master of the Sky and the USA Army.
James Mclelland flew the Red Fire, a Alpha 2. The Red Ranger and a three stager Comanche 3 successfully from a D to a C to a C.
Thomas Cole flew a X-15 and a US Air Force.
Holly Cole flew the Flash and a Cosmic Cobra.
Beth Cole (mom) flew a Outlaw.
Ed ODonohue (dad) flew the Black Diamond.
Rebecca ODonohue flew a Alpha and a Outlaw.
Josh ODonohue flew a Gold Alpha.
Zachary Howard flew the Rocket Ranger.
Sydney Rose flew the Silver Ping and her Princess Power.
Bill Rose flew one with no name, and may be the Bill with no last name on two flight slips that flew the Silver Surfer and the Screaming Eagle.
Zach Rose also flew a un-named rocket along with the White Flyer, the Pencil Deer, White Rocket, Pencil Rocket and Pencil Power, some I think being the same rocket but flown with different names.
Jake Hutchinson flew the Orange Bullet, the Metalizer, the Sky Writer, and the Silver Streak.
Evan Hutchinson flew a Blue Ninja and the Flame Thrower.
Nick Hutchinson flew a Code Red and a Shuttle Express that releases two shuttle gliders to glide back to the ground.
Alexander Hubbs flew a Chrome Dome.
Jason Meyer flew a Sky Writer and the Mini-Gold.
Matthew Nunziata flew the Destroyer.
Steven Ayers also flew a Chrome Dome.
Thomas Ayers flew one simply named the Rocket and the Rocket Liner, maybe the same rocket?
Jim Sinopoli flew the Vertigo.
That was the last of the names signed in as a scout, there may be others but did not put Scout next to their name. The rest of the fliers were:
Adam Hatcher flew a Streaker, a Scout, a Good Luck and a Out Law on LP.
Brandon Jackson flew a big Super Alpha upscale on MP for its first flight with good results and a Phobos also on MP.
Tori Jackson flew a Estes Big Daddy, Baby Bertha, Patriot and the Pot O Gold all on LP.
Curtis Jackson flew a Big Bertha on LP.
Bob Bernatchez brought out part of his classic collection. He flew a scale miniature of the Titan III E missile on MP, the Quasar on MP, scale missiles Sidewinder on LP and Matra Magic R550 on MP. The Initiator on MP and his rebuilt maker of heart attacks also known as the Mars Lander on MP that freefell to about 40 feet from the ground when the chute finally pulls out and deploys to make a soft tall grass landing next to the runway.
Wayne Hill flew a helicopter return rocket on LP called the Helio 1 that is a contest design that looks cool when they work, but the blades didnt deploy so it Lawn Darted, hopefully to be repaired. He flew a two stager named the Texas Fire Fly from a B to A LP that was cool. The Scorpion, Tomahawk and a Big Daddy flew on LP. He also flew one of those paper rockets that you can down load off your computer, print, cut, fold, glue then fly. They have some neat prints and with a colored printer you can get some nice looking ones costing only cents.
Mike Mixon flew a Executioner and scale Harpon missile on LP and a scale Bull Pup missile on MP.
Doc Russell, also a classic flier, you never know what he is going to pull out his closet like the scale Colonial Viper from the old Battle Star Galactica tv series. Keeping it simple he flew the Norad, a Sea Wolf and the Weasel on MP.
Claudia Dodd, out with her dad and brother flew a Baby Bertha on LP.
Mae Dodd flew a Fat Boy on LP. Dad didnt fly anything?
Keith Biddinger flew the X-Calibur, a Cool Spool flying plastic spool and a successfully rebuilt Onyx since last month all on MP.
Michael Edwards, one of two ROTC students who were getting experience in egg lofting competition flew the Egg-Celerator on LP. You learn by your mistakes.
Jessica Dulin, the second ROTC student flew a Estes Eggs Caliber also on LP. Also making the small mistakes and learning from them.
Mark Ferrell flew a Lil Nuke earlier on MP, then the last flight of the day at 8PM dusk with a HP loud and sparkling Skidmore engine in a rocket named correctly as Sweet. At apogee it separated and free fell to aprox 500 ft when the altimeter fired the ejection charge deploying the main chute successfully.
Keith Ferrell flew his on LP named the Red Diamond.
Percey Campbell flew the Javlen and a Big Bertha on LP.
Kevin Cook, or Ryan and Matthew Cook flew the Vertical Assault on a big HP.
Rachel Clancy flew her red Marvin the Martian on LP trying to get the little guy home.
Daud Clancy flew a Out Law and the X-16 on LP stating that while the venders are there, it was his birthday tomorrow, hint, hint.
Brad Shea came out and spent a lot of time prepping his HP launch of a rocket originally built by Paul Phillips and then modified by Brad, named the Pteianadon, after a flying dinosaur. It flew fine and was to separate at apogee and free fall to 500 ft and deploy the main chute. It looked like it pulled the main out at apogee so had a long descent, which is better to be too soon than too late.
Kelly Jenkins, Mr Kelly Jenkins that is, (I keep thinking that Kelly is a Mrs.) flew a small model of the Giant Leap Rocketry Talon 2 a smooth sleek looking rocket on MP. Then he flew his PML Bull Puppy also on MP.
Doug Knight, our favorite collage professor, without students this time so he could just play, flew a Extended Initiator on HP that malfunctioned and blew out the motor casing somewhere in the soybean field. He also flew a Outlaw on LP. He also flew a well-overpowered Phobos that we nicknamed the Mortar Round on HP that was never seen after ignition. That had a nice engine in it too, with the new built in electric ejection timer. Big bummer. He flew his Eliminator on MP then the rocket gods almost called for another
sacrifice on his Big Crayon on HP that had a low altitude main deployment.
Bryan Helms (Dad) flew the TP Express on LP but finally lost that TP tube rocket on its last flight. Also flown was the XLR-18 on LP.
Matthew Helms flew an Un-named rocket on LP.
Amanda Roberts flew her Sky Writer on LP then drag-raced her dad Ralph with UFO saucers. She got the speed and altitude, where he beat her back to the ground.
Ralph Roberts, (Dad) our famed ROCC Club President and Tripoli Prefect was pretty busy most of the day working with the scouts and assisting other fliers, but did get in a flight with his daughter on LP UFOS and maybe Mr Pringles last flight? After 10 plus years has Mr Pringles (made of Mr Pringles potato chip cans) made his last flight? He went up on a Ellis Mtn long burn MP engine, that was a good flight but Pringles landed across the power lines by the road and the wind blew it along the line into the transformers. The electrical company will retrieve it, they do it frequently. Its against the safety rules to try and remove a hanging rocket from a powerline. But its when they get around to it, its not like the highest priority, and by then the elements can take its toll.
Matt Dundorf flew a LP Sky Ranger, Retriever, Alpha III, and an American Eagle.
Paul Phillips flew a black and yellow Bumble Bee on HP then paid the Rocket Gods with another sacrifice that Doug missed with his newly built and primered Primed and Ready on HP for a test flight before the final paint job.
Big Bummer.
Joey Soprano flew the Captin B on LP.
Wesley M ? flew the Space Expedition and the Star on LP.
Tony Stitt flew a LOV IV on MP.
Nathan ? flew a Bandit on LP.
OK, That was a great Saturday, kind of windy, but the flights were angled into the wind, and the scouts seemed to have a challenge competition to get their rockets to drift back and land on the runway.
I will start on the much smaller Sunday report and get it out soon.
And start advertising going down to Orangeburg Labor Day weekend for their annual big East Coast Rocket Meet.
Take care for now, and remember to keep those exhaust nozzles clear.
Roy, ROCC Sec.
