Flying Rockets in the Cold

Hey everybody;

I've gotten a few messages from some of the newer fliers and others asking how we fly in the winter.
Burrrr.. It's cold out there.

We have had many an enjoyable launch in the winter months. It helps if you take a few precautions. Look at the articles of the clubs up north flying in snow fields looking like Eskimos. Why should they have all the fun.
As in the past, we have found that if there is any sunshine at all, the open field acts like a solar collector, making it much warmer at the farm than in town and other residential areas.

We recommend that you dress in layers, so if it's warmer than you thought, you can take off a layer or put on a layer to stay comfortable. Keep in mind that we are at a farm, so use common sense in choosing your wardrobe. Its easy to get a bit dirty and get damp feet, so dress down and comfortable.

If you have one of those "pop-up" shelters, you can bring one out. Besides protecting you from the hot sun in the summer they are good in the winter
providing protection from the wind, light rain and drizzle.

Some people bring out a small charcoal or propane grill to help keep warm. I have a portable fire pit that I bring out. It allows you to keep your hands warm and is a magnet to bring people together. A coffee pot for hot water for hot tea, coco or instant coffee helps. If you have a thermos, fill it with your choice of a hot beverage and bring it out. These little things make it a much more enjoyable day out on the farm. Each grill operator is responsible to keep it under control and guard against accidental fires.

And bring some kind of snack or lunch, eating helps keep you warm by converting the calories into energy, warmth.

Saturday, the possible AM drizzle should be gone by 11 AM, our scheduled start time and be clear for the rest of the day and Sunday should be a bit colder but dry and clear, which a dry cold is easier to deal with than a wet cold.

Other than that, it's rocket launch as usual. And it does seem that engine performance is enhanced in colder weather. Who knows.

Hope to see everyone there.
Roy, ROCC Sec.
