New Years launch report

Happy New Years Day Rocket Launch Report.

I’m sure the word has gotten around already. Yes we indeed did have a great New Years Day launch.

It had a bit of a breeze with calmer periods, but only  high altitude chute deployments or flying off downwind under power put any rocket past the Simpson boundary, and lucky us, he was not home that day

Ken Allen of Performance Hobbies was there for all our after Christmas sale needs. His location did tend to be the main target landing zone for a lot of flights even catching a Estes Crayon while conducting business.

Pictures. Check the Gallery for launch photo’s, sometimes with captions.

Remember, for our embarrassment and your entertainment, any pictures you have from this or any recent launch that you would like to get posted on the web site for everyone to see, just contact Doc Russell at: rocketrycarolina "at" gmail "dot" com, or as some have done, pass it on a disk, memory card or flash drive. We can always get it back to you. That’s how I do it.

Thursday, the 1st of January, 2015.

We had  37 fliers who put up 115 flights burning 135 engines.

That includes all clusters and multi-stage flights.

A’s= 5,  B’s= 15,  C’s= 44,  D’s= 13,  E’s= 14,  F’s= 12,  G’s= 13,  H’s= 9,  I’s= 4,  J’s= 4,  K’s= 2.

(Remember, what I write is influenced by the penmanship/spelling of the writer.)

Roy Potter. I took the time to pre-load 6 Aero-Tech engines to save time on the range. My colorful  rocket in New Years colors, the “Stars and Stripes” flew up on a dark cloudy slow burning H97-6 black jack ending up close to the Simpson fence. The “Thumper” flew twice on a F12-3t, my “Coca-Cola” flew on a G64-4 while my “Bumble Bee” and “Zombie Hunter” both flew on a F52-5t.

Mark Bartkowiak flew the “Michigan Mega Mosquito” with the Michigan colors and team logo on a E9-4. The 3 stage “Ring Thang” flew on a B6 to B6 to B6-6. His old school “Flying Stove Pipe” flew on a C6-7 which was also the glide return version which looked good coming back.

David Strunk flew a “Raptor” on a G79-10 that had a tracker on ch38, just in case. His Way “Bigger Bertha” flew on a I100 with a successful dual deployment at 500ft but just caught the edge of the last row of trees facing the field 20ft beyond the poles reach. He has plans.

Michael Strunk flew a “Bigg Bertha” on a F36 with a successful dual deployment at 500ft and a Estes Pro-Series II “Leviathan" on a H133-9.

Doc Russell flew his favorite upscaled Estes “Sprint XL” on a D12-5 while his Sem Roc “Laxer-X” flew on a cluster of two E9’s. Doc had acquired and rebuilt a old Public Missiles “Luna” sci-fi silver rocket ship that flew well on a CTI G115.

Daniel Little flew a Estes “Taser” a number of times on C6-5 engines.

Dave Popkin flew a “Chimera” with a cluster of three CTI H410’s for a very fast and loud take-off with a dual deployment at 300ft. His “Star Bug” flew on a CTI J1055? again with the very loud and speedy takeoff with a dual deployment at 400ft.

Michael Hollowell flew a Aero-Tech “Mirage” on a G76-5 and a really big red LOC “Xmas Bruiser XL” with a center K805g with a air-start of two I366r’s with a dual deployment at 500ft. There was no damage but the air-starts didn’t ignite till after the drogue deployed at apogee causing it to spin around throwing out the main chute. Very exciting but no damage, everything came down fine.

Jonna English flew a Estes “Purple Crayon” on a number of flights with C6-5’s.

Matt Stecher flew a Estes? “Tomahawk” on a E9-7 and his Estes Pro Series II “Ventris” flew on a F40-4w. His “Der Red Max” and a “M104” both flew on a C6-7. His Estes “Big Bertha” flew on a Aero-Tech D10-7 but with chute deployment at that altitude it drifted up out of site.

Bob Bernatchez. Welcome Back BOB! He had moved to Texas for a better job and had dropped by to visit and fly his Dr. Who time machine called a “TARDIS” on D12-3’s. A really nice kit from Squirrel Works, I think and very stable with straight upward flights.

Stuart Samuels. Again with the imagination. He Re-3-D-Printed a new flying nosecone a bit bigger/wider that flew on a B6-4 with a stable flight so went up to a C6-3, also stable making a big difference compared to last month’s. He also flew his “Bi-Oc” of a printed sheet of paper glued to a sheet of foam board cut and glued as indicated with a center mounted C6-3 for a flying saucer type of flight spinning up into the air. His 150% upscaled “Maple Leaf” flew on a A8-3 that separated with both parts returning spinning like maple seed pods. His “Go Deep” flying football went up on a D12-3 but didn’t eject the “Nurf Football” toward the crowd for anybody to catch. His “Mega Mosquito” flew on D12-3’s while his competition glider went up on only a A8-3 and looked like it had only a few circles till it would land, but instead, it kept going up and up and up till it was just a speck, then gone. It does have his telephone number on it, so who knows.

Scott Pennington. He flew his nicely re-built “Nike Ajax” on a G40-4w while his “Harpoon” went up on a E12-4. The “Mars SnoopDog” flew on a C6-5 and the Estes “Cosmo” flew on a E9-4. His “Kaw-A-Bunga” flew on a H410-7.

J.R. Devine flew a “Eagle’ Fighter on a C6-5, a Estes three stage “Commanche-3” on a D12 to C6 to C6-5 twice working perfect both times. His “Black Knight” flew on a C6-5.

Joe Pettler flew a “Duces Wild” on a cluster of two C6-5’s, a “Der Red Max” on a C6-5 and a large military “US Army” on a G100-7 Skidmark.

Kaitlin Pettler flew her “Pink Peppa Pig” (check the pictures) on B6-4’s and a Estes “Metalizer” on C6-5’s.

Jason Pettler. Flew the “Aura” on a F15-6, a “38 Special” on a F40-7 and a “Formula 54” on a G100-10 that was like a mortar round going up. His LOC “Stovi” with a cluster of seven E9-6’s had a problem with 3 not igniting but one seemed to Kato blowing a hole out the side of the body tube above the motor mounts.

Ryan Bergsmith flew the neat looking “Bullseye” on a C5-3 and 5 looking cool with the skull parachute. His Flis-Kit “Star” flew on C6-5’s and the Estes “Orange Crayon” flew on C6-5’s some times in drag races against the Purple Crayon.

Kim Bergsmith flew her Estes “Pink Crayon” on a C6-5 and a Estes Pro Series II “Leviathan” on a G40-7.

John Bergsmith. Flew a LOC “Fantom EXL” on a J350 with a successful dual deployment at 400ft and the orange Air Force target drone “Jay Hawk” on a F40-7.

Jason Beckert flew a Patriot looking Estes “Patriarch” on a B6-4.

David Beckert also flew the “Patriarch” on a B6-4.

Steve Batten flew the Strong Arm looking? “Strakes on a Frame” on a G40-7w.

Jim Scarpine flew a LOC “Iris” on a H226 Skidmark that drifted away but from the pictures they returned by golf cart after a long walk.

Tim Tulowitzky flew a classic Aero-Tech “Barracuda” on a F15-8 and a three stage “Bumble Bee” on a mini A10 to A10 to A10-4 successfully.

Barb Tobin had the Christmas spirit yet so made rockets out of Christmas decorations. Check the pictures. The “Christmas Present” flew on a B6-4, the “Santa Express” on a cluster of three C11-3’s. The spiral painted “Twister” flew on a B6-4.

Kelly Jenkins flew a really nice “Wac Corpral” on a E9-6 and a Mini “Der Red Max” adapted to fly a standard C6-7 with a streamer recovery than came in fairly close by. Kind of confusing here, but I think Kelly had two “Patriots”, one to fly on a D12-5 and one on a C6-7, or maybe the same one with a converter.

Bryan Butler flew a Estes “Photon Probe” on a C6-3 and 5. The “Chuter Two” flew on a C6-3. The two stage “Long Tom” flew on a B6 to a C6-5. A two stage Estes “CC Express” flew on a C11 to a D12-7. Both successful flights.

Adam Butler flew a Estes “Cosmic Cobra” with the helicopter return nose-cone that went up on a C6-3 but did not seem to have a ejection resulting in a lawn dart. His “Photon Disruptor” flew a number of times on B6-4’s and a Estes Soviet sci-fi looking rocket called the “Flutter-By” went up on a B6-0 for a tumble recovery, but tumbled throughout the flight.

Todd Haring flew his “Risky Proposition” on a I248 with a dual deployment at 500ft. A LOC “Star Burst” flew on a H128 with a dual deployment at 400ft.

Rodney Earp flew a 4inch LOC? “V-2” on a H178 and a upscaled “Der Red Max” on a G138.

Ralph Roberts flew “Amandas UFO” on a D12-0. His “East Side Thug” flew on a G185-10 vmax while the “Cosmic Staff of Azul” (fear it people, fear it) flew on a G106 Skid Mark.

Doug Knight, when not mentoring the UNCC team, flew his “Formula 38” on a F27-8.

Laura Owens flew her new “Lady Pringles” on a G64-7. Maybe we should introduce the Lady P to Ralphs Mr. P.?

UNCC NASA Student Launch Team. Flew the “Roxanne” twice on a J415 with many functions to perform correctly with three separate altimeters in sequence including dual deployment at 1300ft, controlled air braking under acceleration to control the altitude, dual chutes and a controlled separation of the tether lines at 1000ft. Very complicated. It looked like it all worked but they still have to study the results.

Mark Ferrell flew the “Vagabond” on a F27 with a dual deployment at 400ft.

Charles Ogino prepped to fly his “Der Evil Hello Kitty Pink Max” for a flight on a K458 with deployment at apogee. But if you’ve seen the pictures you see that something went wrong. He took it in stride as the cost and risk that comes with the hobby and then drives you to rebuild even better.

Hope everyone had fun and will be looking forward to our next launch, till then, remember to keep your exhaust nozzles clear.
