ROCC 2024-2025 Launch Schedule:

NO launch in May due to the wheat. We hope to fly in June. 

 

 All launches are at the Midland, NC site unless otherwise stated.*

Here are some other launch opportunities in our area:

ICBM & ROSCO, better known as Rocketry South Carolina, flies near Dalzelle, SC., Just NE of Shaw AFB.  More information can be gotten at their site HERE

The Saturn Rocketry Club in Hendersonville is currently switching their launch field. As soon as we know where they land we will post it. Their FB site is HERE

NC Rocketry flies at Bayboro, NC in the northeast part of the state, information is HERE

 Set-up starts at about 9:30, launches commence about 10:30. Field closes about 60 min. before local dusk so we can clean up. Watch the site front page for specifics. Also visit us on FaceBook. You can also check for the FAA NOTAM at https://notams.aim.faa.gov/notamSearch/nsapp.html#/ and using KCLT (Charlotte) as the location. This will give you the starting and ending times for HP flights.

January 15, 2022 Launch Report

Well, even with the 6,000ft altitude cloud level and chilly temperatures, it turned out to be a great day to fly. True, it was in the upper 30’s at 9am, and I believe it only warmed up to the upper 40’s, but there was almost no wind. What winds we had blew toward the south at a high altitude, then back to the north between 1000 or so to about 300ft, then it blew back to the south again. It was pretty well calm over all. But you could feel the chill when a breeze came through at ground level. The only loss we had was of a LP rocket of a student that just got a great altitude and drifted past the creek and tree line before it could drift back to us.

Check the box for a few nose cones, and a few other odd items.

As a note, when you are walking across the fields, keep your eyes open on the ground for anything. Not all motor casings look alike. Also there are mini altimeters, nosecones, motor retainers, ect.

We had  19   fliers,  and flew  56 flights and burnt   63 motors.

This includes all  clusters and  multi-stage flights

A= 4,   B= 0,   C= 6,   D= 15,   E= 7,   F= 7,   G= 9,   H= 10,   I= 3,   J= 1,   K= 1.

 

Remember, what I write is influenced by your penmanship and spelling.

 

Ralph Roberts had a new Red Nova, flying for the first time naked, (that’s un-painted) on a “D12-5”. Took 3 igniters but was worth it, a nice flight.

Barb Tobin came with some of her NAR contest rockets to do some timed, test flights. Her Helicopter Duration #1 flew twice on “A10-3t” motors. 1st flight malfunctioned but the second was totally successful. The Streamer Duration #1 and #2 both flew on “1/4A-3t” motors.

Bill Jetton, one of the students, had a great flight with the Solo on a “C6-3”.

Morgan Pfister ,Student,  flew the Lemon Head on a “C6-5” which got too good of an altitude and drifted over the creek and tree line before it could drift back.

Mathew Pfister, Senior Student Leader,  flew the Red Dart on a “C6-5”, the Blue Max on a “E12-4” and Lethal Threat on a “D12-3” and the Estes Pro Series Majestic on a “E23-5” with the days only lawn-dart in the field, unknown cause.

Gary Pfister, Student, flew the Black Stripe nicely on a “E9-4”.

Alex Bhargava, Student, flew the Fire Storm Yellow on a “C6-5”.

Depesh ?, Student, flew the Fire Storm Black also on a “C6-5”.

Brody ?, Student, flew the Helos on a “C6-5” (not the helio return). Also flew the Lethal Threat on a “D12-3”.

Roy Potter, I flew my Yellow-2, rear ejection, on a “E12-4”, and the Blue-3, rear ejection on a “F44-4”. Both good flights with donut chute recovery.

Kevin Donovan flew his Cool Spool 3 times, on a “F67-4”, “G77-4” and a “G80-6” each a drag race with Mike McKeon on the same motors for bragging rights. Kevin also flew a nice Black V-2 on a “D12-3”.

Mike McKeon also flew his Cool Spool on a “F67-4”, “ G77-4” and a “G80-7” against Kevin. It’s all up in the air as to who won. He also flew a modified Estes Big Daddy, from a 24mm to 29mm motor mount to fly on a “F67-4” just fine. Mike also flew a up-scaled Goblin on a “H550-8”, then on another “H550-8” in a drag race with Leaton Jones Goblin, also on a “H550-8”.

Leaton Jones flew his up-scaled Goblin on a “H550-8” in a drag race with Mike. Again as to who won, it’s in the air. Leaton also flew the nice large BBX two-stage, with a “I540-0” booster to a “H150” main with elec separation at apogee with a elec main deployment at 500ft. Everything worked perfectly with the booster and main body chute recovery. His other flights were a PAC-3 on a “G106-7” Sparky with a good Jolly Logic 300ft chute deployment. His L-2 Cert flight of the DX-3 was with a “J285-12” with a J/L deployment at 400ft. The main was jerked free at apogee but still returned fine. Don’t know if the premature deployment affects his score.

Steve Brown flew his Vulcanite on a “G339-?” with a good elec dual deployment at 375ft. His Excavator flew on a “F51-7” . The really nice looking EZ-I-65 flew on a “H123-10” with a good J/L deployment at 300ft. His Hyper/Nuke Hybrid  (bottom half from a  Big Nuke, - the top half from a Hyper Loc) flew on a “I366-0” with elec separation at apogee, and a good main deployed at 400ft with a back-up at 375ft. Everything worked great. His entertaining flight of the day was of the Tree Stump, on an OLD “I215-8” motor that was to have a J/L deployment at 300ft. Weelll, it sat on the pad like a smoke bomb chuffing a little then finally got enough compression to slowly lift up the stump to about telephone pole height where the ejection charge went off (the delay was burning the whole time it was smoking on the pad) but luckily the Jolly Logic deployment system knew it never made the minimum altitude so it automatically deployed as soon as it sensed it’s falling before making the programed altitude, so it deployed just in time to set it on the ground.

Paul Kraemer, as I’ve come to see, brings out some interesting rockets, he flew a down-scaled Ultimate with a Seven Motor Cluster of “D12-7’s”. All 7 ignited for a great flight and recovery. His No-Name-II flew well on a “H152-6” and the T-Bolt flew well also, on a “G74-9” and the Hi-Tech-45 also flew well on a “G33-9”.

Michael Hollowell, Welcome back you globe trotter! He had a self-printed 3-D printed helo bladed spinning disk, the Whirl-N-Hurl flew on “D12-0’s” with impressive flights. His Ugly but Effective Expeditor flew on a “H123-6” with a good J/L deployment at 400ft. Then Michael flew his big and impressive up-scaled Big Bruiser –EX on a “K805-0”with a successful elec separation with a main chute deployment at 500ft with a back-up one second later. Very pretty, ohhh, ahhh.

Duane Dominick flew the Pumpkin P.I. ( mathematical formula was printed on the rockets side.) that flew on a “H143-8” with a good J/L deployment, but had a entanglement of the chute hopefully with minor damage, Duane also flew a rebuilt extended V-2-EXT on a “H163-8” with a J/L deployment at 500ft but, didn’t attach the chute to the shock cord? (I did that once). It landed flat on the soft soil.

Trent Dominick flew the Red, White, minus the Blue, (a maxi Bertha/Broad sword?) on a Estes “E16-6”. (I haven’t seen the E16’s yet. Got check it out).

Scott Pennington is another flier with some interesting rockets. His Lance Dart flew on a “F67-6” also with a good J/L deployment at 300ft. The up-scaled Der Red Maxx flew well on a “G74-6”, his Estes Explorer also flew well on a “D12-5”, the broad winged Jaws also flew on a “D12-5”, the elegant Cosmo flew on a “E12-4”, the Harpoon flew on a “E12-4”, his Terminator inspired T-1000 Liquid Metal flew on a “D12-5”, and his old veteran Nike Smoke flew on a “F42-6”. Now his very big and good looking black and yellow Thor had an impressive flight on a “H550-8” with a successful J/L deployment at 300ft.
