Flying Rockets in the Cold

Hey everybody; I've gotten a few messages from some of the newer fliers and others asking how we fly in the winter. Burrrr.. It's cold out there. We have had many an enjoyable launch in the winter months. It helps if you take a few precautions. Look at the articles of the clubs up north flying in snow fields looking like Eskimos. Why should they have all the fun.

Launch info for the weekend:

Official launch announcement: Saturday and Sunday January 19th and 20th from 11:00 to 5:00 each day ROCC Sport launch. RSOs and the LCO will still be more stringent than normal, especially if no rain occurs, due to recent Drought conditions. This weekend is the first scheduled launch for 2008 and with predicted rain Thursday we look good for a full up launch and contest. One Note: as of Tuesday, Saturday is predicted to be Windy, winds 15-20 and Sunday much better around 10. This could effect our launch and maybe the contest. So stay tuned and watch for updates Friday night into Saturday. Please, "Read More":

Dragstrip streamer

Bob Bernatchez sent me this scan of an old Apogee Components kit, the design of which came from a NAR tech report (how's that for a convoluted lineage?)to make a high-drag streamer for the b-streamer event. I put it into a folder on our site, here's the LINK Bob was trying various materials to try and replicate the material that Apogee used. I made one with 4" wide mylar from Totally Tubular and it seems to hold a fold very well. DR

Dec. 22nd launch report

This report was compiled and written by Louise Ferrell , in training ROCC Sec. Weather conditions were great on the flight line on Saturday 12/22, despite the forecast for rain and wind! Serious consideration had been given to canceling the launch. Fortunately "cooler heads prevailed" and we had a launch. I think that those who showed up on Saturday instead of heading to the malls had a terrific time! Many who showed were in the proper Christmas spirit wearing quite stylish "Santa fatigues" Ho Ho Ho!!! Click the "Read More" link for the rest...
