Remember the Winter Contests... better get going!

As a reminder (and a nudge for folks like ME!) we have 3 contests coming up in January & February.

January's is the Golf Ball Altitude on a C engine impluse. Basically anything that adds up to a C, like 2 B's, 4 A's, a B & 2 A's, or just a C obviously. The golf ball must recover safely, not just crash from a great height, so you need a recovery device. (I thought of just gluing a motor on, but that won't cut it!)

February's 2 contests are described very well in the Winter Contest Rules .pdf available on this site... just look to the right for "Contest Info" link.

There's also a post in the regular comments section for places where you can get the cluster rings.

Check it out, and (like me), get building!

More on the Golf Ball contest from Roy:

"C" Motor Altitude GOLF BALL Launch Contest

Gold, Silver and Bronze "Mega Mosquito’s" Awarded. (ready to fly)

Any ESTES "C" Motor, C5, C6, C11 (recommended to keep the playing field even)

or an equivalent, example, two "B’s", four "A’s" or a mixture.

* Rocket Must Pass Regular RSO Pre-launch Inspection.

* Rocket may utilize any design concept that pass’s the RSO Inspection.

* Rocket must have a acceptable recovery system for safety.

* Jolly Roger Altimeter Ones will be provided. You can use your own if you have one.

* Jolly Rogers are small enough to fit in a BT-20 body tube.

* Jolly Rogers require air holes in the body to register air pressure change.

* Jolly Rogers can be carried outside rocket body piggy-back.

Fliers can make multiple flights with highest flight scored.

Fliers can make different rockets but only the highest flight will be scored.

Only One Award per flier.

Highest scored flier gets First, Next flier gets Second, Next flier gets Third.

Brad Shea "Test Flew" his "Golf Ball" rocket using a simple BT-20 tube RTF rocket

with plastic fins with a coupler attached to the ball using a large streamer recovery.

Using a C6-3 he got 595 feet.

November PoLaRep

Well, Saturday, December 15th's launch was great, with a HUGE group of flyers, but Sunday, alas, was a rain-out. We're rescheduling another make-up on January First, 2013, so don't party TOO hard. To keep you entertained, however, Roy Potter, our ever-hard-working secretary, has put together the November Post Launch Report (PoLaRep). Please click the "Read More" link to see the fully skinny... thanks Roy! dr

Sandy Houston sent this my way on Tuesday... Aerotech and Rouse-Tech are announcing their 2012-2013 "certification special" and it seems like you can certify for FREE!

Read the article HERE

Man, it doesn't get much better than that, I'll tell ya. Thanks for catching that one, Sandy!

Great launch, cool site, next month...

Hey... great launch this weekend everybody! All seemed to go well save some small things and we  had a good turn out. Thanks to Ken for coming out on Saturday and all who helped to make the launch a success.

I think getting the sign-up sheets back in the loop was a great idea. It gives us a difinitive time to work and a time to fly, thanks John.

There's already some GREAT photos in the gallery for November... thanks to Ralph and Michael Hollowell, I think. If you have more, send 'em on to me at: rocketrycarolina at gmail dot com (make the usual punctuations, I hate spam robots)

I wanted to share a cool web site with everyone as well... I ran across this and it makes fascinating reading. It's "Any Date in Space History", located HERE.

Take any date in the calendar and find out what happened in space history. Great reference material.

Remember to get ready for December's launch, currently scheduled for December 15th & 16th. Ken is currently scheduled to be with us on both days, so bring Gran's Xmas money and buy some rocket fun!

Hurricane Sandy & ROCC site

First I got this via email...

Dear Customer,

I have some unfortunate news to share. Our primary data center, Peer1, in Lower Manhattan lost power yesterday at about 4:30PM local time. At that time, we smoothly made the transition to generator power and took comfort over the fact that we had enough fuel to last three to four days. (Peer1 stayed online during the last 3 major natural disasters in the area, including a blackout that lasted for days.)

At 8:30PM yesterday, we received reports that the lobby in the data center's building was beginning to take on water. By 10:30PM, as is sadly the case in most of Lower Manhattan, Peer1's basement had experienced serious flooding. At 5AM, we learned our data center's fuel pumps and fuel tanks were completely flooded and unable to deliver any more fuel. At 8AM, they reported that the generators would be able to run for a maximum of four more hours.

Unfortunately, this means that Squarespace will be offline soon (our estimate being at 10:45 AM today). Be assured that while this will impact our availability, there is no chance of data loss or any other permanent effects. We have simply run out of power, backup power, and cannot access our fuel in a flooded basement.

Our teams have been working tirelessly on contingency plans. We are working to bring the Squarespace systems back online as soon as possible. As you have probably read, all bridges and tunnels into and out of Manhattan are closed and large portions of the city remain without power. We will do everything in our power to get Squarespace running as soon as possible, and we will remain online for as long as it is safe.

Squarespace support will remain available 24/7 during this downtime. We will post updates to Twitter via @squarespacehelp and urge you to follow us there. Updates will also be posted to blog.squarespace.com.

Our hearts go out to the many people who have lost their lives in this terrible tragedy and also to those who continue to suffer through the consequences of this historic storm.

Thank you for your understanding,

Anthony Casalena
Founder & CEO

Then, I started reading this:  http://status.squarespace.com/

If ever I had a doubt  that moving the ROCC site to SS was a bad idea it is totally and completely gone. Hats off to the folks up there in NYC for being manic SysAdmins... if you are one, you know what that means!
